A question, posed at just the right time, can change your life. Be strong and have courage when you answer!
It was 2009. I was walking into a meeting with another Bible study leader. She casually asked me if I could make something to represent the upcoming Joshua study. My plate was full. I was a wife, a mother, and a caregiver. I was always “on call”. I didn’t think I had the time. Making a quilt from a pattern that lists how much fabric to buy and explicit instructions on cutting and sewing is one thing, but this project was all about being creative. How do you represent a Bible study with fabric, needle and thread? But, a bigger question was, why would I take on a project like this when my plate was full and I had multiple quilt projects in multiple states of completion. I make quilts under the direction of the Holy Spirit. I spend a lot of time thinking about who is going to receive the quilt. I spend a lot of time praying for the person receiving it. I ask the Holy Spirit to guide me as I choose fabrics, patterns, threads, buttons, and people who will quilt the layers. In other words, I didn’t make this quilt by myself. One thing led to another and I made something to represent the Joshua study. I thought I had failed because the study was done before the quilt was completed. I didn’t fail. I worked in God’s time. Eight years later I completed a book to explain The Joshua Quilt. The book God’s Gift Within: The Story of The Joshua Quilt explains the symbolism of color and fabric within the quilt while documenting my journey as a wife, mother, and caregiver.
